This week with TTR: Golden week, fast and slow!

Hi friends,

As the saying goes, "where there's a will there's a way". And since we're a group of volunteers, wills and ways tend to pop up suddenly and unexpectedly.

Until a couple days ago, the only major event planned was a fun loop in Nippara next Sunday.

Then we thought how important it would be to provide a free, non-commercial recon of the Okumusashi Long Trail race we will hold in June. A couple days later, we already had an epic weekend plan to cover most of it at the start of Golden Week.

Then we went in suburban Tokyo to relax and discovered a lovely little loop with picnic tables and playgrounds. And since we had to cancel our Hanami in March, this seemed a perfect replacement. So today we have a third event lined up for Golden Week too.

And who knows which other plans will arise in the coming days? Keep an eye out and join the adventure!

Keep following our newsletter and our Facebook page for more announcements and updates.

Let's enjoy running over a fun ridge! We will start in Okutama Station station at 07.17 and end in Okutama Station station around 13.00. This Intermediate course is 23km long, with an elevation gain of 1200 m, and is open to 10 participants.

We are meeting at Okutama station Saturday 26th at 7:17am. From there, we are going to take the 7:31am local bus to Higashi-Nippara where we will arrive after a 30 minute ride.
From Higashi Nippara, we will start the ascent to the Nagasawa Ridgeline (which is, according to my personal experience and taste, the best trail running experience Tokyo has to offer): the ascent is 5.5km long and with a 800m D+.
Once on the ridgeline, we will run for 10km (reaching Mt. Toridani along the way) with minimal elevation variations. After 10km, we will reach a fork that will take us back to Higashi Nippara after 8km (6 of which are on trails and 2 on road) of descent: the descent is accessible with some steep, but non technical, segments.
The aforementioned fork if taken right goes all the way for another 7km to Mt. Kumotori. We will turn left going back to Higashi Nippara from which we started.
The length of the run is around 23km with 1200m D+. The level is intermediate due to mileage, long commute, early start and lack of stop points during the run.

You will be required to bring:
1L of water
Snacks/Food
Rain jacket/Windbreaker
Change of clothes

The bus stop at Higashi Nippara has vending machines and toilets, but no lockers. Lockers can be found at Okutama station where we will return by bus. You may want to carry everything with you.

Let's enjoy discovering the Okumusashi long trail! We will start in Nishi-Agano station at 08.55 and end in Hanno Station station around 15.00. This Upper intermediate course is 36km long, with an elevation gain of 1700 m, and is open to 12 participants.

THIS EVENT WILL BE RUN AT BOTH RACE PACE AND GROUP PACE. See description below.Meet us at Nishi-Agano station at 8:55 am for a run along the last 31 km of the Okumusashi Long 105k race course, finishing at Hanno station somewhere around 15:00 or 16:00.
This Upper intermediate course is 36 km long, with an elevation gain of 1700 m, and is open to 12 participants.

Although the run starts and ends at different stations, you can use the lockers at Hanno station when doing the train transfer in the morning.

If you wish, you can use a nearby hot spring after the finish. After meeting at the station, we will jog for about 3 km on road until the old Kitagawa elementary school, now converted into a bustling Visitor's Center, which serves as aid station

At the 74 km mark during the race. From here, we are already on race course, and the group will split in two:

Carlos will go ahead, on pace for a sub-20 hours race. He will not be "guiding" (not waiting at intersections, for example), but will be happy to run with others. Alain's group will be like a more typical TTR group run event. Carlos group will aim to reach Hanno's central park in 4 hours 45 minutes, while Alain's group might arrive about an hour later - or a bit more, especially if stopping for soba at the Koburi toge tea house.

It is entirely possible to join Carlos at the beginning, and if the pace seems hard, wait for Alain's group and join them at previously agreed meeting points. For those joining Carlos' group, it is mandatory to have the course map on your phone and/or watch. As for the course: from the visitor's center (A4), there is a long road, which later becomes a forest road, up to Buna toge, on the Okumusashi green line ridge. From here, the course mostly meanders along the ridge (passing through temples, viewpoints, and other remarkable landmarks) until shortly after Yugate village.

After descending to the valley and passing by Chonenji temple (A6, km 97), we go up the Hanno Alps and enjoy a few more ups and downs on the trails before the home stretch. Overall, this is the easiest third of the race. This run can be combined with the next day event, which covers the first 42 km of the race course. Some members will be staying in Hanno overnight to simplify their transport logistics.

As for the course: after some twists and turns around Tenranzan and Tonosu mountains, we will ever the Hanno Alps. Following a never ending succession of ups and downs, we will get to Nenogongen temple, A1 (17 km). The next section is much more runnable and fun, with flowy trails until Ballsack city (A2, 26 km), also known by the locals as "Haraichiba". One of the toughest sections of the race comes next, a long slog until Bonomine, before dropping down to Nolla.
